Biography
of Urania Petit
Urania Petit was born in
St. Lucia, West Indies and
emigrated to the
United States
in 1989. She is a graduate of
Central Connecticut State University, where she received the Bachelor of Arts
degree in Political Science and
Public Administration and from the University of Connecticut’s Graduate School of Social
Work, policy sequence, from which
she earned the Master of Social Work
degree.
Urania was elected
Working Families Party Registrar of
Voters in 2008, the first third
party candidate to have this
success. She currently serves
as Chairwoman of the Hartford
Chapter and Co-Chairwoman of the 1st
Congressional District of the
Working Families Party. In
addition, she serves on the board of
directors of the National
Association of Social Workers-CT
Chapter. In 2007 Urania was
appointed Executive Director of
Community Works of Connecticut, a
non-profit organization based in Hartford.
Among her many social
and political associations, are
membership in the National
Association of Black Social Workers,
the Greater Hartford Alliance of
Black Social Workers, the NAACP
ROVAC-The Registrar of Voters
Organization of Connecticut.
Further, Ms. Petit was a candidate
for Hartford Court of Common Council
in 2007 and has served on the
Hartford Living Wage Task Force.
Urania lives in Hartford with her daughter
Nia.
